The First United Methodist Church is the result of
several church unions. The first of note was in 1939
when three branches of Methodism reunited following
their schisms a century earlier. That union brought
together the Methodist Episcopal Church, the
Methodist Episcopal Church South, and the Methodist
Protestant Church. Their new denominational name was
The Methodist Church. The second union of note was
with the Evangelical United Brethren Church in 1968.
The Evangelical United Brethren Church was itself
the result of the 1946 union of the Evangelical
Church with The United Brethren Church. This new
denomination, known as the E.U.B. Church,
immediately began conversation with The Methodist
Church, bringing about the 1968 church union that
created the new denomination known as The United
Methodist Church. |
