Director's Message
As Director of Worship Arts at First United Methodist Church, I am very
excited about the vibrancy and diversity of our worship life and especially
our musical activities. There is almost literally something for everyone at
First Church. Our Chancel Choirs provide a wide variety of music for our
worship life, as do our bell choirs (for kids, youth and adults), youth
choir, and grade-school children's choir programs. Pianists and other
instrumentalists are given many opportunities to use their talents in
praising God. We even have a contemporary music praise team & praise band for those who want to specialize in that area.
It's an exciting time to be praising God in song at First Church. I feel very grateful to be a part of it, and I want to encourage everyone I can to become a part of God's music!
In Christian love,
Clarence McCoy |

Adult Opportunities Chancel Choir Lancaster First United Methodist has two -- count 'em, two -- Chancel Choirs, one for each Sunday worship service. They are led by Clarence McCoy, director; and accompanied by Virginia Rosberg, organist. The 8:15 Choir rehearses Wednesday evenings at 7:30 pm in the choir room; the 11:00 Choir, Thursdays at 7:30 pm in the choir room. Both choirs provide the primary musical leadership for their respective services for the choir season of September through early June. They are open to anyone from high school age through adult without audition. The ability to read music is not required, nor is a solo-quality voice. Ongoing voice training is a basic part of rehearsal time. The only real requirements are a love for God and a willingness to share that love in song. (A sense of humor as well is probably a good idea under director McCoy!) Bell Choir The Hi-Lo Ringers, named after the initial donors of the handbells, Hiram and Lois Lepley, is the primary adult bell choir. It, too functions during the regular choir season of September through June and is open to all adult persons of the church. Clarence McCoy directs. The ability to read music, while not exactly a prerequisite, is very helpful to successful participation. The group provides leadership to our worship services periodically during its regular season. Rehearsals are Thursday evenings at 6:30 in the choir room.
Praise Team & Praise Band This group of singers and
instrumentalists leads worship at our
9:45 Praise Worship. Participation is determined by audition. If
interested, contact
Clarence McCoy.
Youth Opportunities Youth Choir The Youth Choir, under the direction of Sherry Johnson, provides worship leadership periodically during the regular choir season of September-June. It is open to junior high and high school age youth. The ability to read music is not required. Rehearsals are Sunday evenings, 6:00-7:15, in the sanctuary. Bell Choir The Celebration Ringers, under the direction of Clarence McCoy, provides worship leadership periodically during the regular choir season of September-June. It is open to junior high and high school age youth, and others as needed. The ability to read music is not required, but very helpful to successful participation. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings, 6:30-7:15, in the choir room. Children Opportunities Children's Choirs The
Children's Choir is open to children age 4 through grade 6. Children will begin to develop both an appreciation for worship music, and the skills necessary for a lifetime of participation in that music. Rehearsals are Sunday
mornings at 9:15 in the Fellowship Hall. Directors are Andy Brown, Aileen
Brown and Dianne Garlinger. Bell Choir This group, under the direction of Clarence McCoy, provides periodic music leadership to our worship services during the regular choir season of September through June. The Heavenly Metal Ringers is open to young persons in our church who are in grades 5 through 8, and use our new handchimes. The ability to read music is not required. Music reading will be a part of the training that occurs as part of the weekly rehearsal. Piano or instrumental background is helpful, however, to successful participation. Rehearsals are at 5:45 pm on Wednesdays in the bell room. Other Opportunities - Church Band
- Small Instrumental Groups
- Small Vocal Groups
- Soloists (Vocal and Instrumental)
- Gathering Music at the Sanctuary Grand Piano
All of the above opportunities are on an as needed basis, but especially during the summer, the choirs' off-season. Announcements in the worship bulletin and in the Circuit Rider are used to communicate these opportunities to the congregation.
